Why I’m digging on Global Roots
*This is, in no way, a sponsored post. I have been moved by the beauty of six degrees to share this organization with all of you today. Please donate what you can.
I’m not sure if it’s the instinct that comes with mothering a child or the sheer magnitude of children unable to live the life that all children deserve, but when I happened upon Global Roots, the first thing I found myself doing was scrambling for my wallet.
How could I help? What could I do? Where do I sign?
In a nutshell, the initiative of Global Roots can be explained in this snippet from the front page of their website:
“Global Roots is a grassroots children’s charity that seeks out, tests and then supports local humanitarians who are helping to improve the lives of needy children who have been orphaned or abandoned in a place of war, famine or social unrest.”
There are plenty of ways you can help these efforts as well: donating monies, sponsoring contribution catalog items, volunteering as a member of their Service Corps, or donating specific supplies that the children need.
What I love about this organization is that they are focused on researching the realistic needs of those they are helping. They are less focused on throwing your money around here or there and are more determined to fulfill the needs of the humanitarians volunteering their time to help these children around the world.
So what am I personally doing? Well I’m donating the $10+ a week I shell out for drive-thru coffee to Global Roots. My sprouting love handles are already thanking me. I would urge you to do the same…assuming you are as clinically addicted to caffeine as I am known to be. It doesn’t necessarily have to be coffee though. Eat out of the house one less time, skip seeing that movie, take a pass on snagging that cute top “because it’s on sale!”, or find a way to squeeze it into your existing budget. Any amount above zero will do.
Take some time out of your day today from Facebook stalking your high school exes, tweeting what you ate for lunch, or watching YouTube videos of honey badgers to familiarize yourself with Global Roots. I guarantee you won’t be sorry or sad or feel like you’ve wasted your time like with the three formers I mentioned you doing with your time on the internets.
I’m going to add a graphic right over there in the sidebar that will track my donating (y’know, a good, old fashioned checks and balance system).
Share your donation efforts in the comments or send me an email so I can make a reader donation icon too. Let’s see what we can do ladies and gentiles!
Happy helping!
